Yoga in Yelapa, MX

July 2 – 7, 2026

Yoga Classes Led by: Leah Gillman & Gordon Jonas

Assisted by Karen Johnson

Yelapa Bay from about 480 m (1600 ft) elevation on the old road into town. The road has been allowed to deteriorate badly as it nears the town, one suspects to favor the boating concession, which ferries tourists and supplies from Puerto Vallarta to the north. There are numerous small hotels and open-air restaurants on the wide beach. This side of Cabo Corrientes, the peninsula that juts into the Pacific south of Puerto Vallarta, is the wet side, and the tropical forest is green and dense even in the dry season.

Los Naranjos is located in a small, picturesque town called Yelapa — a community with less than 1,500 inhabitants. Yelapa combines the magic of the sea and the jungle, where you can enjoy beaches, mountains, rivers and waterfalls. The main access is by sea, and there are no cars, so its paths are pleasant to walk with fresh air and beautiful landscapes. Yelapa is a unique place to experience nature in all its splendor, in a calm and relaxed atmosphere.

The Los Naranjos Eco-Hotel & Retreat Center website is chock full of great information and photos, and worth a deep dive!

WEATHER

We can expect temperatures from the mid 80’s to low 90’s with varying levels of humidity and occasional afternoon or evening rainstorms.

YOGA CLASSES

Classes take place on Los Naranjos’ “Maloca” which is a decagonal, wooden platform, on the stream, and surrounded by vegetation. Leah & Gordon, with Karen’s assistance, will be teaching nine classes total. Morning classes will be physically active, evening classes, more restful.

Classes will accommodate all levels with the expectation that students are in relatively good physical condition and familiar with the asanas and transitions common to vinyasa yoga. Students are (always) encouraged to modify the practice to meet their needs.

ACCOMMODATIONS

All of the houses are comfortable and unique. They have palapa roofs that are in harmony with the jungle surroundings, which can be appreciated thanks to the absence of walls that would obstruct the view. All rooms have beds with mosquito nets.

The bathrooms have hot water, with talavera sinks and woods from the region.

You will love sleeping in the traditional palapa houses that put you in direct contact with the elements of nature.

Leah and Rafa will make palapa and roommate assignments based on what Leah thinks you’d prefer 🙂 and what Rafa knows about the palapas. You can let Leah know in your registration form, of any roommate, or other preferences that you may have. You can see pictures of more of the individual palapas, and read more about the accommodations HERE.

MEALS

Nutritious breakfasts, lunches and dinners will be served. Meals are prepared by local chefs and much of the produce is grown on the adjoining organic farm, Madreselva. You’ll be eating the best quality food available, with preference given to local products, such as seafood, fruits and vegetables.

An afternoon activity option could be a farm tour or educational workshop on how they plant, grow and prepare their food.

Yelapa also has great restaurants with tasty and varied cuisine and prices for different budgets. The Los Naranjos staff is happy to give recommendations.

You can tell Leah about your dietary restrictions on your registration form.

SUGGESTED AFTERNOON ACTIVITIES

Afternoons are ‘free time’ to spend however you like. There will be suggested activities, some of the options will have an added fee. More to come on the different options which will include things like hikes to waterfalls, sitting on the beach, strolling the streets (paths) of Yelapa, scuba diving, farm tours and more…

SCHEDULE (subject to change)

Note: The schedules for 7/2 & 7/7 are based on these flights: Alaska’s AS 689 & AS 690, (they are the best looking as of 12/28/2025, in terms of price, reasonable times, no stops, etc., between the Bay Area (SFO) and Puerto Vallarta (PVR) on 7/2 and 7/7). The timing on those days for our boat rides, meals, and yoga classes, allows for adequate travel time.

7/2 Thursday

2:30 p.m. Meet at the Los Muertos pier in Puerto Vallarta. We’ll take a 45 minute boat ride to Yelapa where we’ll be met by our retreat center host, Rafa. Rafa will walk us to the retreat center where you’ll have time to get settled. Note: “Los Muertos Pier” is a sufficient ‘address’ for a taxi driver.
